Photojournalism

Photojournalism has greatly changed my perspective on coverage. It has shown me a new side of reporting and the value that photography can have on the viewer. Photos often reveal more than just a piece of writing. They are able to easily convey emotion and sentiment, amazing aspects of coverage that truly enhance the reader’s experience. In my time at Scot Scoop, I have taken hundreds of photos for sports games and feature stories. Some of the best are pictured below with brief descriptions, and they show my progression in photography skills over time.

Photo #1

This was the first sports game I covered in my time at Scot Scoop. In this photo I took, a Carlmont girls varsity volleyball player spikes the ball towards the Woodside team. I had to adjust to the quick movements of the players in this photo to eliminate blur.

Photo #2

In this photo of girls’ water polo, I had to use the zoom feature appropriately to hone in on the action on the opposite side of the pool. This allowed for a clear, focused shot of a player throwing the ball at the opposing goalie.

Photo #3

In this photo I took of a girl’s JV soccer match, I had to adjust and play with the ISO because of the dark setting I was filming in. Through waiting for the perfect moment, I was able to get this great shot of two rival players running to the ball.

Photo #4

This was the final match-up between the massive rivals of Carlmont and Sequoia in boys varsity football. Each season, these two teams play one another to win the Terremere Trophy. Here, I was able to effectively capture the players on the field and the loud crowd behind them.

Photo #5

In this same rivalry football game between Sequoia and Carlmont, I also tried to portray the fans’ emotions and their importance in the overall environment. Here, I took a picture of Carlmont’s fans, the “Screamin’ Scots,” to show their enthusiasm for the game.

Photo #6

Here, I covered a matchup in boys varsity basketball teams between Carlmont and Hillsdale. I was able to effectively zoom in and focus on our player’s face to get a very close photo that clearly portrays the emotion of the moment.

Photo #7

Here, I covered a girls’ varsity game between Carlmont and El Camino. I was able to adjust the ISO to the dark setting and focus my camera on the fast action. This is the resulting photo I got.

Photo #8

In this photo, I covered a rainy girls varsity lacrosse match-up. I had to adjust my camera position to protect it from the rain and thus, had to use major zoom and focus to capture this moment.

Photo #9

This is my photo for my feature story on students who work out of necessity to support themselves. This was an extremely different type of photo as it was staged. I had a friend put on a specific outfit and walk past a typical place of work.
